What is Pterygium?

Pterygium are non-cancerous growths that can form in the corner of the eye. They are caused by exposure to the elements and are most common in those who spend a great deal of time outdoors. UV rays, wind, smoke, pollution and more are all potential contributors.

Pterygium Symptoms

The symptoms of a pterygium vary from very mild to causing pain, discomfort and vision problems – and can sometimes be confused with cataract symptoms. Pterygium can be most easily diagnosed by seeing the growth forming at the corner of the eye. If you think you could have a pterygium, it’s important to see a qualified medical professional to prevent scarring and loss of vision.

Pterygium Surgery

Removing a pterygium is a quick in-office procedure that usually takes about ten minutes.

For this quick procedure, you’ll be given a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort. After removing the pterygium along with some of the conjunctiva tissue, the doctor will replace the tissue with a graft of membrane tissue that will prevent more pterygium from growing.
