Cataracts

Cataracts are an ocular condition that occurs when the naturally clear lens of the eye becomes clouded. The condition is more likely to afflict those over the age of 65 and can occur in one or both eyes. Indications of cataracts include general blurriness of vision, sensitivity to light, especially at night while trying to drive, and progressive difficulty reading. However, those suffering from cataracts have the option of discussing the possibility of cataract surgery with our Dallas cataracts surgery specialists.

Cataract Surgery: The Path to Clearer Vision

Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure designed to remove the natural lens of the eye and replace it with an artificial one. This lens is called an intraocular lens (IOL). Your eye doctor can help you decide which artificial lens is right for you and the type of surgery (traditional cataract surgery vs. laser cataract surgery). A local anesthesia is administered prior to the surgery, and some cataract patients may be given a tranquilizing medication to help them relax if requested. Most patients report that the surgery lasts less than 20 minutes. Patients are advised to arrange transportation home after the surgery rather than driving themselves.

Recovery times are highly specific per individual patient needs and circumstances, but most people find their eyesight clearing up within a week or so of the procedure. You’ll be seen by your eye doctor within the next day or so, so be sure to keep a list of questions and concerns.

What Does Cataract Surgery Entail?

Once you decide that receiving cataract surgery is your next step toward clearer vision, you will probably be interested in learning more about what the procedure actually entails. A typical cataract surgery involves a few simple steps:

  • First, one of our Dallas eye surgeons will numb your eye and the surrounding area with a local anesthetic.
  • Next, they make a small incision in the front of your eye, which allows them to easily remove the lens that is clouded by a cataract.
  • They then perform a lens implant and replace the clouded lens with a new artificial lens (called an intraocular lens) made from acrylic, plastic, or silicone.
  • As your eye heals, it fuses with the new lens, and your vision begins to become clearer.

The entire surgical procedure takes less than 20 minutes, and because the incision is so small, it seldom requires stitches or sutures. Cataract removal surgery is an outpatient procedure, and in many cases, patients are on their way home within two hours of arriving.
