Why LenSx?

June 4th, 2012

Let’s talk about one of the hottest topics in ophthalmology today – Laser Cataract Surgery. You’ve probably read about it, heard it advertised or have had a friend or family member mention it.

Laser Cataract Surgery is certainly revolutionary, and our team of surgeons is excited to be on the forefront of this technological revolution as we offer the LenSx Cataract Laser for cataract procedures. In fact, we were one of the first 50 vision correction practices in the country to feature this incredible technology.

As such, we are receiving many questions about laser cataract surgery – how it differs from standard cataract surgery, what the advantages are and who can benefit from the LenSx Cataract Laser.

We thought it appropriate to address several of the most common questions we receive regarding the LenSx, so here we go…

Is this like LASIK?

The LenSx Cataract Laser is akin to the IntraLase iFS laser we utilize in our Blade-Free LASIK procedure, but it is specifically designed for use in lens replacement procedures for cataracts. The technology allows us to perform multiple steps of the procedure with a laser that were previously performed with a surgical blade. In addition to providing additional peace of mind for our patients, we believe the LenSx allows for a more precise surgical procedure and can enhance surgical outcomes.

Didn’t doctors already do cataract surgery with lasers?

As surprising as this may seem, laser cataract surgery is the latest breakthrough in the treatment of cataracts. Don’t get me wrong, cataract surgery has come a LONG way in recent years. Even in the last half-decade, we have begun offering the LifeStyle Lens Procedures that provide an array of new options for cataract surgery, all centered toward providing multifocal vision (near, intermediate and far vision). In fact, many of our LifeStyle Lens Procedure patients report they are able to complete their daily tasks and hobbies without the use of readers or bifocals.

Even though we have the capability of performing no-stitch, no-needle cataract surgery, there still was not a way to take advantage of laser precision during the procedure. Now with the LenSx Cataract Laser, we are able to bring what we believe to be an increased level of accuracy and safety to our patients.

Is there anything wrong with the standard cataract procedure?

The standard cataract procedure has been performed millions of times by surgeons around the world, and particularly tens of thousands of times by our surgeons right here at Kleiman|Evangelista Eye Center. It is one of the most common surgical procedures performed today, and in our experience, it is a very safe and time-tested procedure.

As with any procedure or treatment performed here at Kleiman|Evangelista Eye Center, we are constantly researching new ways to increase safety and improve surgical outcomes for our patients. By incorporating the LenSx Cataract Laser, we believe we are able to offer a new level of accuracy and predictability in cataract treatments, which translates to better outcomes.

Is LenSx laser cataract surgery covered by insurance or Medicare?

Currently, the LenSx is not covered by insurance or Medicare. To be clear, many insurances as well as Medicare will cover the portion of the procedure related to traditional cataract surgery. At Kleiman|Evangelista Eye Center, many of our cataract patients elect to have the LenSx Cataract Laser  thus, they pay out of pocket or choose to finance the difference for the LenSx Cataract Laser using one of our flexible and very affordable payment plans. This is something our patient counselors will discuss with you at your evaluation after reviewing your insurance options.

Is LenSx right for me?

This is a great question. If you are suffering from cataracts, the answer is most likely YES. However, the doctors at Kleiman|Evangelista Eye Center would need to assess your eyes and your specific vision needs before recommending any particular procedure.

At Kleiman|Evangelista Eye Center, we never recommend a procedure or treatment without first examining your eyes and determining your specific vision needs. Every patient’s eyes are different, and a full evaluation is needed before we make our recommendation. A thorough discussion between you and your surgeon will help determine your course of treatment.

We are excited to offer the LenSx Cataract Laser, and we look forward to helping you achieve the enhanced vision you deserve, whether it is with the LenSx or one of our other advanced surgical technologies. We encourage you to schedule your laser cataract surgery evaluation by calling us at 1-800-714-2020 or simply submitting our 60-second web form.
