What Is IntraLASIK?

Corneal Flap

The first step in IntraLASIK surgery is creating a thin flap on the cornea, the surface of the eye.  Unlike traditional LASIK, the doctor uses a femtosecond laser to create the flap rather than a microkeratome blade.  Although results from using the blade were similar to those of the laser, use of a laser yields a smaller margin of error.

Corneal Reshaping

The second step in IntraLASIK is to use a separate laser to reshape the cornea to improve vision.  This laser, known as the excimer laser, can correct most common forms of refractive errors found in adults, such as myopia (near sightedness), hyperopia (far sightedness) and astigmatism (abnormal curve of the cornea).  The laser vaporizes tissue without damaging adjacent stroma (supporting tissue), and causes less pain than earlier techniques.  Once the laser has reshaped the cornea, the flap is repositioned.
