Traditional vs. Bladeless LASIK – Which One Is Right for You?
Even if you’ve already decided to undergo LASIK, you’ll still need to determine which type of LASIK is best for you. We’re here to help you make an informed decision.
If you’ve considered undergoing laser eye surgery, you’ve probably heard of LASIK. What you might not know is that there are actually two different types of LASIK: traditional and bladeless. Both of these procedures can provide you with lasting improvements to your vision, but there are some key differences between them. Here’s what you need to know to find out which one might be right for you.
In both traditional and bladeless LASIK, a surgeon reshapes the cornea, the outer layer of the eye that’s responsible for refracting light. During the procedure, the surgeon forms a small flap on the surface of the cornea, lifts it, and uses a laser to alter the curvature of the cornea as needed. The flap is then replaced and allowed to heal by itself.
Traditional LASIK is sometimes referred to as bladed LASIK because the flap is created with a special ophthalmic device called a microkeratome. Specifically designed for use in LASIK, this small precision surgical blade has become highly sophisticated over the years. For people with mild to moderate refractive errors or visual conditions such as glaucoma, traditional LASIK can be the better option.
As the name implies, bladeless LASIK does not rely on a blade. Instead, the surgeon creates the flap with a high-energy femtosecond laser such as the IntraLase iFS. Though it can take slightly longer than traditional LASIK, the actual technique remains largely the same.
Because it’s a more precise procedure and can be customized to the patient’s eyes, bladeless LASIK is usually preferable for patients with more sensitive eyes, thin corneas, abnormal corneal curvature, or moderate to severe nearsightedness.
Choosing the Right Procedure for You
Despite the slight differences between them, both traditional and bladeless LASIK are highly effective treatments for nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Indeed, they’re among the safest and most popular elective procedures available. Which one you choose depends largely on your unique set of eyes.
