My LASIK Adventure!

As many of you may know, I had LASIK done a few weeks ago, and it is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! However, that decision didn’t come easily, nor did I decide to do it spontaneously.

Years ago after I had my second child I noticed that it was difficult to read street signs at night, but I didn’t think much of it. I mean, I’ve always had 20/20 vision, so I chalked it up to the fact that it was just dark outside. Then while visiting my husband’s best friend from high school in Austin one weekend, we decided to go see the brand new office he had built! His friend Javier is an optometrist and he was very excited to show off his new investment. Javier told me to sit down in the chair and he would examine my eyes, and I gladly accepted because I was curious to see what my vision was since I was the ripe old age of 36. He was shocked to find out I had never worn glasses because my vision was so bad — he said I shouldn’t be driving! Needless to say, I ended up getting glasses at 36 and it took me 3 years to finally convert to contacts! I was not a happy camper. Now, a couple of years later, contacts were NOT an easy part of my day…. sometimes I was late getting to where I was going because it took me forever to get them on in the morning. And not to mention the way they felt by the end of the day, dry and VERY uncomfortable! Plus, I love traveling and they were always a challenge at the beach– I’m sure many of my contacts are still floating around somewhere in the ocean.

During this time of my crazy days with contacts & glasses, many of my friends were getting LASIK done, and one of my best friends, Kellie Rasberry, constantly sang the praises of how LASIK changed her life! So I decided to look into it. I asked Javier what he thought. I talked to my husband. I pretty much asked everyone I knew that had it done how they felt about it! They all said the same thing. LASIK CHANGED THEIR LIFE!

I am known as a shopping guru, so i did what I normally do when contemplating a big purchase– I started doing my research. When I googled various surgeons in DFW, I was shocked at the number of complaints there were about many of them. I realize that there are going to be complaints with any business, but some of the surgeons had way more than others– and since we are talking about my vision, it was important to me to pay close attention to my research! I also remembered that I had a couple of friends that have worked in LASIK offices, so I asked them to give me the nitty gritty on who’s who, and all of them recommended Kleiman Evangelista Eye Centers. So off I went!

From the very first time I walked in the door, I felt so good about the office. The staff was hands down the best! They were very friendly and very informative! I never felt pressured either — no hard-core sales pitch! I had several questions about the procedure, the down time, the cost, and the long-term effects, and they answered every single one — reassuring me about my decision.

On the day of my surgery I really wasn’t nervous. I guess because I knew so many people who had already had LASIK and because their staff was so awesome and reassuring. Dr. Kleiman came out to the waiting room to get me and we chatted for a minute. (He is really a neat guy — I could hang with him because he is so funny!) My husband sat outside the room and watched through the glass. It literally took 10 minutes MAX! In fact, I didn’t even realize that the actual procedure was happening — I thought they were still doing the prep work! Literally — a couple of minutes in that chair and I got up, walked across the room, and my vision was already 20/25!!! He told me I was good to go! I am still in awe — I LOVE technology!!!! It was truly an awesome experience — so quick, completely painless, and it changed my life!
