LASIK Alternatives

If you and your surgeon determine that you’re not a good candidate for LASIK, there’s no need to worry! There are a number of other procedures that can help improve your vision so you can live without the hassle of glasses or contact lenses.

Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK)

PRK is similar to LASIK in that it uses a laser to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The procedure actually predates LASIK, and has been used to improve the vision of millions of people around the world over the past three decades. Because PRK produces similar results as LASIK, it’s often the safest, most effective alternative for patients who have thin corneas or other traits that prevent them from receiving LASIK.

The primary difference between the two surgeries is that PRK is a “flap-free” procedure. This means that instead of creating a flap on the surface of the cornea like they would during LASIK, a surgeon performing PRK will gently swab away the thin outer layer of the cornea (called the epithelium) to access the treatment area.

While the epithelium regenerates naturally post-surgery, PRK does require a longer recovery period than LASIK. Improvements to your vision will appear more gradually and take a little longer to stabilize, as well. However, like LASIK, PRK is a safe and effective procedure with decades of proven results.

Visian Implantable Contact Lens (ICL)

Visian ICL is a procedure designed to correct common refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. However, unlike LASIK and PRK, the procedure doesn’t make use of lasers. Instead, a surgeon places an implantable collamer lens (ICL) into your eye that works with your natural lens to improve your vision. This makes Visian ICL a good option for patients who have chronically dry eyes or thin or abnormally shaped corneas.

Visian ICL is a non-invasive outpatient procedure that can be performed in under 30 minutes. Its recovery time is swift, and most people notice improvements to their vision in as little as 24 hours.
