Comparing Daily, Weekly, and Monthly Contact Lenses

September 10th, 2019

What’s the difference between daily, weekly, and monthly contacts? Learn more about the pros and cons of each option.

If you’ve decided to leave glasses behind and start wearing contact lenses, how do you know which type is right for you? There are a few different varieties of contacts out there, but most fit into three main categories: daily, weekly, or monthly disposables.

Daily contacts, like the name suggests, are only meant to be worn for one day. Weeklies are reusable and can be worn for up to two weeks, as long as they are stored in fresh solution each night. Monthly contacts can be worn and re-worn for a full 30 days.

However, wear period isn’t the only thing you need to consider when choosing which type of contacts to buy. Compare and contrast the different contact lens types using these four key categories:

1. Cost

There’s a significant difference between daily, weekly, and monthly contact lenses when it comes to cost. Since you use and discard daily contacts every day, you can expect to spend $350-$900 a year on dailies. Weekly and monthly contacts are significantly less expensive and cost anywhere from $150-$480. You’ll also have to factor in the cost of routinely buying contact lens solution.

2. Maintenance

Daily contacts are no muss, no fuss — just grab a fresh pair of lenses each morning and you’re good to go! However, since dailies are built to be thrown away, they’re thin, watery, and more fragile than long-wear contacts. Weeklies and monthlies are a little hardier, but you have to take good care of them, too. Even though you don’t have to change your contacts daily, you do have to rinse them with contact lens solution and store them daily. You also need to replace your contact lens case every three months, just like your toothbrush.

3. Convenience

Dailies are great for traveling because you don’t have to worry about carrying contact lens solution and a lens case. However, you must remember to count out your contacts as you use them so you don’t end up with one contact lens left when you come to the end of your box. You don’t have to worry about that with weekly and monthly contacts, but they are less convenient in terms of day-to-day maintenance.

4. Lifestyle

Are you an athlete? Do you plan on wearing your contacts occasionally or every day? Would you find it tiresome to exercise proper contact lens care each day? Your lifestyle might be the most important factor to consider when choosing between daily, weekly, and monthly lenses. Pick the contact lens type that will fit most seamlessly into your routine.
