If you’ve decided to undergo cataract surgery, your next step will be to select the right intraocular lens (IOL). This is important for a few reasons, including the fact that you can’t have cataract surgery on the same eye more than once, so you only have one chance to select the right lens for your lifestyle. Luckily, you will be able to choose from a number of replacement lens options. Much like how bifocal glasses allow you to focus on objects both near and far, multifocal artificial lenses allow your eyes to focus on objects at a variety of distances. Other types of replacement lenses can correct eye conditions like presbyopia (age-related farsightedness) and astigmatism.

Cataract surgery with premium replacement lenses can deliver a host of lifestyle benefits — not only will your vision be clearer after surgery, but depending on your choice of lens, you may not even need your glasses anymore! At Kleiman Evangelista Eye Centers of Texas, we’re pleased to offer all three premium lens types currently available on the market, each of which offers unique advantages:

At Kleiman Evangelista Eye Centers of Texas, we’re pleased to offer all three premium lens types currently available on the market, each of which offers unique advantages:

Monofocal

The most common IOL, monofocal lenses allow you to focus on objects at a fixed, preselected distance (such as close, medium, or long range). The majority of people with monofocal replacement lenses opt for long-range lenses, which they pair with glasses when reading and performing other activities that require close-range focus.

Toric

Toric lenses correct the refractive errors caused by astigmatism or oval-shaped corneas, so if you have either, your surgeon may recommend this option. The benefits of toric IOLs are as straightforward as they are enticing: once your toric lens is in place, you won’t need glasses!

Multifocal/Lifestyle

Multifocal/lifestyle lenses work similarly to bifocals and progressive eyeglasses, allowing you to focus on objects at varied distances. These lenses will not only reduce or eliminate your need for glasses, but they’re a great choice if you maintain an active lifestyle or regularly work on a computer.

ReSTOR 2.5, 3.0 (multifocal)

The AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® family of IOLs offers more lens options to help patients achieve their post-operative vision goals. Designed to deliver excellent visual quality and acuity over a range of distances, these lenses could reduce your dependence on glasses for activities such as:

  • Cooking, cleaning and playing cards
  • Reading, smart phone or tablet use
  • Watching TV, driving and attending sporting events
  • Shopping, golfing and more

TECNIS Symfony(multifocal)

This lens is also for patients who lead active lives and want to see the world with better eyes at long and close ranges. The Symfony elongates focus, rather than splitting light across multiple foci, and creates an enhanced depth of field. It offers sharper contrast, optimizes vision in any lighting condition, and clarifies near, intermediate, and distance vision. Research shows 85 percent of patients using the Symfony either no longer wore glasses or wore them very rarely. During your consultation, your surgeon will help you decide which lens is the best fit for your needs and lifestyle goals. This will ensure your vision is the clearest and sharpest it can be after you undergo cataract surgery.

AcroSof IQ Restor

This lens is for patients with an active lifestyle who also spend time at the computer or enjoy reading. It corrects or multiple distances to accommodate your activities and lifestyle. Using “apodized diffractive” technology, which functions like two lenses in one, the AcroSof IQ ReSTOR allows for near, intermediate, and distance vision correction. In clinical trials, the AcroSof IQ ReSTOR completely eliminated the need for corrective eyewear in over 80 percent of those who had both eyes treated. 94 percent of patients involved in the clinical trials reported they would elect to have the procedure again.
