To best understand the benefits of Blade Free HD IntraLASIK, it’s important to know that LASIK is a two-step process. During the first step, the eye surgeon creates a small flap in the protective covering of the cornea. In step two, an excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea and correct vision errors.

For decades, doctors have used a hand-held surgical instrument called a microkeratome to create the flap. While the results have been excellent, there was also room for a margin of error. Blade Free HD IntraLASIK is a computer-controlled procedure. The IntraLase^® FS creates a flap with uniform thickness and design every single time, reducing potential blade-related complications and further lowering any risk of infection. Blade Free HD IntraLASIK allows a wider range of candidates to qualify for the surgery because having thinner corneas or a higher degree of prescription error is no longer a concern.

During Blade Free HD IntraLASIK, the IntraLase femtosecond (FS) laser emits a cool laser light that passes harmlessly through the surface of the eye to a pre-determined point in the cornea. The laser produces a layer of tiny bubbles which gently lift and separate the tissue to create the corneal flap.

Once the laser vision correction is completed, the surgeon will move the flap back into place, where it reseats in the cornea without the need for stitches. The IntraLase FS creates a perfectly sculpted beveled edge on the flap, which enhances the seal and decreases the risk of complication or infection.
